Rationale behind "Let's Really! Play Maths" Centre

Crisis in Education with poor maths achievement:

The present unemployment rate in South Africa is a staggering 32,6% (Stats.gov.za).

In South Africa, as in many other developing and developed countries, there is serious concern about the underachievement of learners at all levels in mathematics and the impact of this problem on tertiary study and growth of the national economy (Maree, 2010).

More than 77% of learners in Matric writes Maths literacy which means that they cannot enrol for courses in Engineering, Medicine or Sciences.

The programme is aimed at improving children's Mathematics achievement by focusing on cognitive aspects (math concepts, metacognition and information processing, critical thinking, and problem-solving) and neuro-psychological facets (including executive functioning, study orientation, Mathematics anxiety, and Mathematics resilience).

Maths Whartels aims to facilitate self-directed learning by changing not only the learner's mathematical mindset or thinking by including principles used in play therapy, but also that of teachers and parents to optimise learning and understanding in Mathematics.

This includes specifically designed puppets/characters to help the small child understand concepts such as anxiety, resilience and study attitude. The concept of the board game brings about the fun of playing with Mathematics.

Through the Whartels and Whoblin characters, the story of how the brain learns and discovers Mathematics is told to the child at a very young age. The board game focuses on linear and theme methods that can be used in remedial Mathematics to improve mathematical skills.
